This intensive Online Low Vision Seminar is intended to provide the occupational therapist or occupational therapist assistant with the necessary skills for working with older adults and people with diabetes who have low vision. This Online Low Vision Seminar provides heavy emphasis on strategies for evaluation and treatment ideas for every aspect of ADL/IADL function for the patient with low vision and explains how specific eye diseases affect visual functioning.
Through a combination of interesting lecture, visual aids, and case study, this course strives to ensure the clinician will understand low vision principles for carryover with immediate application to the clinical setting for program development. Included in this Online Low Vision Seminar will be instruction for: compensatory techniques, including the use of other senses and remaining vision; assistive devices; and establishing a network of appropriate community resources.
This Online Low Vision Seminar is .6 CEU's or 6 contact hours and the cost is $100.00 with a discount to AOTA members for a price of $90.00.
A screening tool that facilitates testing for low vision will also be provided to enable the clinician to easily recognize when vision hinders function. Documentation examples will also be provided to facilitate adequate skills for developing care plans, as well as writing progress notes and discharge summaries when working with patients who have low vision.
It is self-paced and broken into seven separate sections for easy navigation. The instructor, Rhonda Landry, OTR,SCLV, CDE is available by email to answer participant questions within 48 hours of submission. A certificate will be emailed to participants within 48 hours following submission of post tests. The test is "open book" so that the participant may complete the answers during the presentation or refer back to the presentation as needed. Test questions are graded within 48 hours of submission. Attendees have to receive a score of 80% or better to pass. If they score below 80%, they are allowed to take the test over two additional times. EDUCATIONAL LEVEL: Entry level - one year or less of clinical experience working as an occupational therapist or certified occupational therapy assistant.

CANCELLATION POLICY: No refunds will be made if course is in progress and interrupted by issues beyond our control such as natural disasters or war. If the course is ever cancelled by the provider due to unforseen circumstances, all participants will be given a full refund.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- Be able to list disciplines involved in the low vision rehabilitation team and identify delineation between roles.
- Describe changes that occur due to eye diseases and their effects upon visual functioning and occupational performance
- Identify anatomical parts of the visual system
- List eye diseases that cause low vision in the older adult
- Identify various types of tools to assess visual functioning
- Recognize basic components of PRL retraining for compensation with vision loss
- Recognize differences between magnification devices, optical properties and their relationship to visual functioning
- List components of an occupational therapy evaluation for low vision patients and intervention strategies
- Describe psychosocial issues that hinder occupational performance and interventions to engage patients for enhancing quality of life
- Identify intervention strategies for self-management of diabetes for patients with low vision
and recognize the scope of occupational therapy when working with this population
- Be able to list low vision terminology and recognize appropriate documentation
and billing guidelines for reimbursement
- Differentiate intervention strategies between different treatment settings for program implementation
